Things to use in my design development
From my research I have noticed some things I could incorporate something’s that are inspiration to me into my design development.
1. The chalk boards in ASDA for menus, easy to change and fits the client requirements of a low budget.
2. The text on the signage in KFC works well on a red background much like the refectory walls and creates some eye catching typography.
3. The text and layout of type that Bryan Patrick Todd uses would work well for big wall sections of signage, but would have to use my September font in a unique way.
corperate identity
We had a class discussion about corporate identity; in this we discussed what gives a company an identity. We come to a conclusion that a corporate identity is not just a logo, slogan or design of a company it’s all of these also it the feel of a company, what sort of vibe it shows, how it presents itself.
Corporate identity is about how you want your business to look to your target market – i.e. those folks you call clients or customers – as well as those other folks that haven’t become customers or clients yet…but you would like them to. This is generally achieved through the following:
1.Corporate design: logos, corporate colours, uniforms, etc.
2.Corporate communication: public relations, promotional material, etc.
3.Corporate behaviour: values of your business and how those values are demonstrated/promoted
Mc Donald’s have created a sleek identity using the colours red and yellow. The chain of restaurants has a natural look to it with wood furnishings, to promote it as healthy food. They have a strong advertising program putting their classic golden arches on a bold black background just like their uniforms. The values of this company are family, mainly aimed at children creating a friendly environment yet mature at the same time.
Bryan Patrick Todd
Bryan Patrick Todd is a graphic designer living in Louis vile Kentucky. He believes in a simple approach, with strong typography and illustrated elements.
I like the bold, bright and flowing type he uses, the layout and arrangement also inspires me. I like the different point sizes and typefaces he uses much like the KFC signage.
I think it would be good to incorporate the layout of his work in my designs, this would work well as a big wall piece to fill space like they have done in Bristol university but using text.

Analogous pattern.
To create this pattern we picked two colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, we then added a shade of black or white to one colour so we had a shade or tint of our secondary colour. The third colour then becomes an accent colour the second. The first colour is the dominant colour, the second colour supports the first and the third colour accents the two.
complimentary colours- blue orange

Here we used complimentary colours on a pattern; I choose green and blue. I liked the outcome of this, it was exciting to look at and the mixture of blue and orange made it easy on the eye.
colour wheel
When looking at colour theory, we made our own colour wheen. this gets us familiar with primary, secondary and primary colours also tertiary.
After we had done this I noticed that our orange did'nt quite look right, this is because it is very hard to find a pure orange.
Southbridge college refectory.
I think this refectory has a very relaxed look, I like the way it uses the red black and white as its colour scheme these work very well and all make each other stand out. I think the layout and colours make the place look older and suited to young adults. I think we could utilise this in the college refectory and make it work well but we would have to be careful not to make some colours clash.
University of Bristol
I really like the design of this refectory. It looks urban and in touch with its target audience (university students).
I like the use of the bold black text on a white background, making it stand out. The colour scheme of it works well and the white walls make the green stand out. The walls being whit fill the room with light.
I love the artwork on the walls it flows round the room well and stands out, I liked how they used this to sill up the white space and may try this in my designs.
Macclesfield college
The college greets you with big sinage showing where they are serving food. the colour scheme of cream wood with black chairs makes the chairs themself stand out.
They have used purple and white on their singage and I would imaging this theme runs thoughout. the purple stands out well on the white and is easy to see. This would work well in the refectory as the college has the same color scheme if the red walls were painted white.

Viet hoa cafe
The Viet HOA cafe Designed by Vow Sung, gives a well-planned out, sleek and modern feel to the café.
The long open plan seating area with a black and silver colour scheme, gives it a mature and clean ambiance.
Apart from the long table in the middle I think this would work well in the college, including the colour scheme. However it is not in the client requirements to change the furniture. I would have liked to have seen a logo for this cafe as i feel i would have been inspired by the sleekness if the branding was carried through to the logo.

The LAH! Restaurant in Madrid, designed by Ilimio design.
The LAH! Restaurant in Madrid, designed by Ilimio design.
The look is funky and relaxing with a lot of space and places for groups. With the cut out wooden dividers, this gives it a more private feel to the open plan restaurant.
The hanging lights, metal chairs and booths covered in strips of fabric give it an off hinged and modern look.
I think this idea for the refectory would work well, as the restaurant kind of look like a modern cafeteria. Setting out seating like they have done in LAH! Would give it more of a private and mature ambiance. Perhaps college students from the creative industries department could create the fabric strips to give the refectory a personal feel.
Sainsburys
I like how sainsburys have set out a one way system using a wall to guide the queue. This also allows a lot of space to place produce around the till.
The seating is simple and bland. It has a flowing monotone colour scheme. the large windows allow light to bounce off the white surface of the table and illuminate the otherwise dark room.

KFC
KFC depicts a family restaurant with the logo stands out using bold black lines on a white background. They use a warming bold red to welcome there customers in. They have used illustration to promote the brand.
The interior is covered in a grey wood giving an organic and healthy feel to the restaurant. the addition of vibrant red chairs stand out from this. the art like lamp shades and shape of the furniture, including the sofa give an urban relaxed look to the inside. appealing to a younger generation.
The signage shows pictures of original recipes, healthy foods and fresh produce. this makes us believe what they show us and think it is healthy. The different sizes and fonts of type instantly grabs attention, this and the white text on the bold red background.
I think we could take something from the signage in KFC this is because we already have red wall's in the refectory and could adapt our sings to fit around this.
ASDA
Although ASDA has a simple look to it, it does have a cosy and warm feel to it this may be because of the colour of the walls (deep red). The "food to go" sign suggests a quick answer to a snack if you’re on the move; this is backed up by the spaced seating area that is welcoming and looks easy to sit down for a short while. I like the chalk board theme of the menu making it stand out and easy to read, this would work well in the college as the old signage is hard to read. Chalk board are an inexpensive way of displaying produce. The way they have placed snacks near the counter further pushes the idea of a quick snack but also pushes the selling of products.
The gary cooper
The signage and menus have a mixture of sans and san-serif font to it giving it a mixture of informal and formal.
The menus look cluttered and busy but have a casual look to it. The titles are very bold grabbing the attention of the customer. I think this could work well for the refectory but not as busy, easier to read and with a simpler layout.
I think the signage is good, using bold colours and lots of things popping out. Some have a formal look and other a more casual look to them, this then would appeal to two types of audiences, one to relax and a more mature one. This reason makes me think similar signage would work at college.
I think the interior is good but looks cluttered and lacks that comfortable feel to it, the sofas look welcoming whereas the space filled with tables and chairs look cluttered and might make the refectory look the same.
Costa cafe
Costa have used Burgundy and maroon colours, this gives a sense of warmth and welcoming to the place. On the food display they have used green signage this makes us assume that the food they are giving us is a healthy option and giving there products a fresher look. The layout of the text has a slightly professional and eloquent look to it, this may be the script font they have used.
The branding of costa suggest, an inviting feel from the door being open to tables and chairs outside. On the inside a warm relaxing adult environment.
I think the ideas of having sofas and tables like costa would be a good idea for the collage refectory as it would create a mature feel and also like a place to study not just to eat. However I think this may be too expensive.
