In this image I choose To make the focus point of the image stand out, being the number plate, I done this by using the pen tool to select the outside of the image I then choose Black/white in the image drop down menu.

I choose to just turn this black and white, like BrownJhons. I thought the white would stand out it's self like Nicholas Goodden's work.

Here i made the image black and whit I tried to add a glow effect to the  light. This did not turn out well I though it made it look too rough.

I changed how I edited this image and decided to let the light be left as the original image. I done this by making a duplicate layer, making one black and white, the other with colour. Once I had done this I placed the black and white image over the top and erased the area I wanted to sow though.I really like the out come of this one as it is a lot like Brownjhons work and the things i pick out work well.

In this i used bevel emboss to raise the shape around the text. I thought this looked cool and gave a different 3D texture to my image.

In this image i added a glow effect to this image, I done this so it look like the club was coming to life after dark. The neon glow pays hommage to the old rave scene in the early 90's where by clubbers used glow sticks.
This image was edited from its original colours as I thought it would make it stand out against the dark brickwork. I used red, white and blue as methodist churches are part of the english culture, therefore reflecting the type from the colours of out national flag.
I picked out the type in these colours to accentuate the colour already in the photo.
I turned this image to greyscale and made the circle signs red to make them standout against the rest of the image.
For this image I inverted the layer so that the type stood out against the background. This made the type much easier to read.
In this image I changed the symbol colour to yellow therefore making it a focal point of the image. The symbol is a ZooYork logo which is a skate board brand. I could copy and paste this symbol many times over the image changing the colours each time which would have turned my image into a campaign poster perhaps.
I made the background around the tree image greyscale so that the hue and saturation of the tree could be adjusted in order to make the tree image more prominent.

Nicholas Goodden

Nicolas Goodden is a urban photographer. Goodden is based around london he uses photo editing softwear to manipulate his images and create different effects on them.

I think this image really stands out, he has used the bold san-serif text to catch you're eye also by making the sky dark he has made the colours stand out from the image. I think he may of used a fish eye lens of take this from a lower angle as the sky seems to be curved.

Even though this image is dark and in black and white, I think the sharpness of the lights make it stand out from the black and illuminate it's self .

Thursday, 12 December 2013

I took this image from a lower angle, I thought this might make the text look longer. I decided to take this as I thought the red graffiti would stand out on the grey background.
I thought this sign might be good to manipulate as I could make the red stand out and use a grey scale for the background much like the work of Brownjohn.
I saw this and thought I take a picture because of the style of text and the colour, I don’t think I will use this as part of my calendar as it may be hard to manipulate.

I liked this as the type is small and kerned close together. As it is hand written in bold marker it stands out against the back background making it more eye catching.

I took this from an angel to  get the full effect of the marks and old stickers on the sign, again this in in a san-serif text. I like all the texture on this image giving it a lot of different things to stimulate the eyes
I decided to focus on The Bedfordshire text as we were creating a calendar about the Bedfordshire/Dunstable area. I like the text it looks a bit like the impact typeface. I think this image would work better if there were less dirt over the text.
This is a bold font, again it is sans-serif, I took this from a distance as I wanted to see the different shapes of the roof and it might make it a better image to look at.
The type face in this image I san-serif, I decided to take this image as the imagery is very street like also I think the colours would stand out if edited in the style of brownjohn.
I took this image from a lower angle so you could see the raised san-serif type.the dark background also reminds me of Robert BrownJhon.
I thought this would be a pretty cool image to take as it's an old rundown nightclub also the text is a lot different from the other images I took.
I like this image as I think the yellow light has a nice effect, making the image look dingy. I think this image would be good to manipulate.

I choose to take this image as i really likes the type face, again a san-serif type face. The stencil like style is bold and makes it stand out also i like how the surface adds texture to this image.

I took this as I was interested by the mix of s san-serif font and what I think is a script font. As this image was graffiti I thought I would take the image.

Like my other image i thought i take it from below to show the raised text, I also thought it might look better if i stepped back and caught more of the grey sky in the background, a little bit like BrownJohns work.

I thought in this image i could make the colours stand out and manipulate it well i took this from a lower angle so it would include the under part of the décor.

Raw Type

This sight is more for blogging, where different people can blog their work and show it to any one who has the internet. i think this is like BrownJohns work as he done a visual essay but with this sight people change the colour or edit different photos.

London typegraphica

London typographic is a sight witch allows people to take photos of type and art around London and upload them from there phone, it then places them on an online map of London for other people to view.

Here is an image i liked and took from the London typegraphica website. I like the match of green and yellow also the serif text they have used. I am not sure of the type face but i really like it as it has a retro look.

This image may have been taken from a commuter on his/her way to work or even some who is going sight seeing, this is why i like this web sight as you do not have to be professional about it or even in the art/design industry. If you see something on you're travels you can just stop take a photo and upload it.

This caught my eye as the brightness of the lights, this image almost looks professional.

I can see how this idea may have been influenced by Robert BrownJohn as the work produced by BrownJohn is very urban and his photos look natural like the things in his photos have not been put there by a human. They do not look staged. This web page is also urban art you can find just in the streets, it may be graffiti or just the way you're surroundings look and this is how BrownJohn took his photos.

Experimentation

Here I experimented with Brownjhons work at first I created a path around the text and then on the paths window i choose fill path.

After I found I could change the text using an easier and quicker method. I used the magic wand tool to select the text, after this i then used the fill tool to change the colour of it.

This is my final image, i think this works well and gives a modern look to Brown Johns work.

Robert Brownjhon

Robert Brownjhon was an american graphic designer recognised for his graphic design work. he worked on movie titles such as with Russia from love and gold finger, he also worked on the rolling stones album let it bleed. Here i will be looking at his street level work and analysing it for my research.

I found that this is quite a dark image but he uses the white chalk of the text as a focus point allowing the black background the pick out the chalk. The text has been hand drawn in chalk in a script font, this gives the street art a "posh" look not as you'd expect from graffiti. he has kerned the letters together making the text look more fluid and gives the photo more of a simple and spacious look.

The image as a whole is very dark, even the lines between the bricks, again this follows suit by having a dark background and solid light text to stand out amongst this. he uses a sans serif font I think it is bold too this gives it even more impact on the image and draws the eye straight to the text. This text like the other image has also been kerned closer together making a prominent statement and after first glance you realise that it is actually a sign.

By this point i have gathered that the style of this work is focused  on urban imagery and black and white imagery. This image look's as if it is a pointless sign, this is not that signs original place (lying in a pile of rubble) and why is there a bottle of what looks like drink next to it. This could be rubble from a building sight or a squat created by a tramp. The imagery it's self is very abstract and leaves a tale to be told.
This image is very urban where as this could be a street, it could also be a stolen sign wich has been put in this place for the purpose of the image, the s shaped metal on the walls remind me of an industrial sight. The way he has placed the sign above the s shaped metal makes it look like it is balancing there or even floating a bit like an optical illusion. the sign is in a sans serif front.
This image is my favourite as this could be a modern or old shop, but judging from when street level was done i assume it is an older shop but without colour this takes the aspect of modern or old away with colour this could just be a modern run down bar.  The bold text is in a serifed font and is in grey so blends with the image.

Assignment Brief

Our task for this brief is to create a 2014 calendar for the creative industries department of central bedfordshire college. The calendar will display 12 photographs of street typography in and around dunstable. Taking main inspiration from Robert Brownjohn.

evaluation

I really enjoyed this brief, what really helped me to create my series of 80’s inspired posters, was the club to catwalk exhibition. The exhibition helped me to visually see the style and fell of the 80’s whilst the music created an ambiance.
My main influences for my two final pieces were Billie jeane, Nick Knight and Katherine Hamnett. When I incorporated the sketchy style of Billie jeane, the rainbow colours of knick night and the bold type faces Katherine hamnett used. I think this is what gave my work an 80’s look.
For my first illustration I used a photo of Madonna with an 80’s new romantic look. I then picked out the outlines of her face with bold black lines making it stand out; I used inspiration from Billie Jeane and used a tablet to sketch her hair out in individual lines. To finish it off I added bright red lips and a faint V&A logo behind this, I then surrounded it with a diamond shape and made these yellow to stand out against the black of the hair and face. This then led me to my second illustration as the diamond helped me make slight changes and place this illustration into on big illustration in a dynamic pattern. I changed the hair on my illustration to block colours and my other with a multi-colour face like nick knight’s work, I then changed the background colours to primary colours (red, blue, yellow) and placed a yellow v and a logo in the centre, and this made my second illustration as a whole.
For my first poster I enlarged my first illustration and mirrored them on each side so where they overlapped made a smaller diamond shape. I finished this off with bold Katherine Hammnet style text and the travel information smaller underneath. The background was white making the yellow stand out on the illustration and the black of the face and text worked well and complimented the yellow.
My second poster I placed my dynamic illustration on both sides, I then made the background black making my primary colours stand out and clash much like the style of the 80’s. After this I used a bold impact text like Katherine in white with a yellow outline making it stand out on the background.
I am very happy with my outcomes, and I think I have achieved the style I was going for with bold clashing colours, an 80’s new romantic style and clashing colours. If I was to improve something on my work I would pay more attention to detail on my illustration I think this is only a minor blip on my work.

Billie Jeane

Billie Jeane uses a sketchy technique to create his art work, using biro Indian ink and paint; he then digitally edits his art. I like his work, the rough approach he uses and technique would be a big inspiration in my work.
